I Tried Online Therapy! Would I Recommend It?

At the beginning of 2020 I felt confident and optimistic that Canada’s healthcare system and government was fully equipped and capable of handling the challenges to come. It is now May of 2021 and we are still in a massive rut.

Mental health has been on a steady and rapid decline. I cannot imagine how difficult it must be for those experiencing the worst of our time.

In my case I had been isolated for too long, had a baby, experienced depression and anxiety, clambered out of a bad relationship, my parents both had health scares, and the icing on the cake, I was being told by sometimes well meaning people how terrible of a job I was doing at being a parent. A mouthful, I know but I had never had to face so many different personal challenges all at the same time.

So now, I have this precious little girl that needed me. No matter what I was going through, she needed me and that meant I had to do something to get better. So I did.

I eventually reached out to a psychology practice in my area seeking assistance. Though it was not cheap, I was willing to put the money up to get treatment. The person I spoke with made several suggestions on other ways I could seek treatment without having to pay so much. I honestly think they were filled to the max with the number of patients resulting from the “pandemonium”.

One of the resources she recommended was online therapy through Mind Beacon.

It was overall an easy set up. There was an extensive questionnaire to start. Very soon after that was submitted, I was contacted via email by a therapist with whom I was paired. She was a very knowledgeable and helpful registered social worker.

The treatment program lasted a total of twelve weeks. The entire process was tailored to my specific needs. Each week my therapist selected new relevant activites, including reading material loaded with information to help me understand the challenges I was facing and then tips on how to work through them. At the end of the reading there would be a worksheet offering an opportunity to practice the new skills introduced in the reading portion.

If I had any questions or comments regarding the activities or even if I just needed to vent or reason through a specific issue, I was able to contact my therapist via a messaging tab. More like an email thread, with responses usually the next day.

If I hadn’t signed in to the platform she would send me messages to check on me. More like gentle nudges reminding me she was there if I needed to talk, or had questions.

My progress was monitored using short weekly questionnaires rating how I felt in specific situations. Based on my answers and our conversations she was able to choose new material that was most relevant to my needs for the upcoming week of activities.

Now that I have completed my 12 weeks, I am confident that I was given enough tools to help me manage my depression and anxiety. I enjoy life again, my problems didn’t magically disappear but I can process my emotions much better as I now understand me better.

I’m so happy I tried it.
